When Thanksgiving approaches, it is normal to think about what we are grateful for. Yet gratitude need not be a once a year activity; in fact, we should all build it into our lifestyle. Most religions and psychological theories (and 12-Step recovery groups) advise using gratitude as a daily practice.
About 12 years ago, I went through a difficult time in my life that included many losses. I met a woman who told me that each night she would think of something she was grateful for to match each letter of the alphabet before going to bed. I decided to try that.
It was one of the best things I ever did for myself. Although I no longer do it daily, I am now able to see all the wonderful things in my life and this world with much more clarity and give negative events less power to disturb my attitude.
So I suggest that you write 5 things a day that you are grateful for in a journal for 30 days. I think you will notice a big attitude adjustment!
